Sesquicentennial Book Donated to Mansfield Library

Elliott Book LibraryMANSFIELD, PA (8/14/07) — The Mansfield Sesquicentennial Committee has presented a copy of the book, The History of Mansfield to 1890: A Reprint of the Address of Simon B. Elliott to the Mansfield Free Public Library.

Elliott was an important figure in 19th Century Mansfield, said Dennis Miller,  director of public relations at Mansfield University and co-chair of the Mansfield Sesquicentennial Committee.

"He designed and helped build the second seminary after the first one burned," Miller said.  “He was also the chief figure in the design and construction of the Methodist Church, the Wellsboro jail, and several other buildings in the area.  He was also the man who saved Mansfield Classical Seminary from being sold at a Sheriff's sale."

Miller said Elliott's 1890s address includes the history of the Seminary and Normal School as well as a portrait of Mansfield residents and their passionate dream to have an institution of higher education in Mansfield.

Publication of the book was made possible by a donation of $2,500 from Citizens & Northern Bank.

The book is available for sale at the Mansfield University Campus Bookstore, Strohecker Vision Care and Citizens & Northern Bank in Mansfield. The cost is $10.
